In a case of “reverse” domestic violence, police allege 35-year-old Iysha Finneran lunged at her husband’s throat – managing to cut it – before reportedly confessing to officers nearby their Wade Street home on Monday.
Wagga Local Court late Tuesday afternoon heard that Finneran, who wiped away tears for much of her bail hearing, was otherwise a woman of good character.
Public defender Will Buxton told magistrate Michael Crompton that Finneran’s husband did not require immediate transport to hospital because the injuries were not life-threatening.
Mr Buxton questioned “where the line should be drawn” on charging a person with attempted murder.
“(The injuries) are not up there with murder,” he said.
But the police prosecutor contested the claim, arguing that the incident was severe – and it could have been a different outcome if a sharper blade was used.
The court earlier heard that two children, aged 12 and 8, witnessed the incident.
In deciding bail, Mr Crompton noted that Finneran had no criminal history and worked full-time in Wagga as an aircraft painter. However, he said it appeared the prosecution had a strong case against Finneran.
“Despite the fact the accused has no criminal history, on the facts before me, the seriousness of the offence is grave,” he said. “The application for bail is refused.”
The case was adjourned to February 24.
