Wagga man Tom Meates, 28, was travelling home after watching the Sea Eagles thump Cronulla at Brookvale Oval when, just over an hour from pulling into the driveway, the car veered off the Hume Highway.
Tragically, Tom was killed in the crash and his fiance, Teician Golder, was hospitalised.
“The Sea Eagles wish to pass on their deepest condolences to the family and friends of the late Tom Meates,” a post on the official Manly Warringah Sea Eagles Facebook page said.
“Tom was a passionate Manly supporter who tragically passed away in a car accident early Monday morning on his way home to Wagga after attending Brookvale Oval for the Sharks match.
“A former player of Christian Brothers Manly, Tom was known to many friends as 'Meatsey'.
“His fiancé, Teician Golder, was injured in the accident and remains in hospital. We wish her a speedy recovery. The couple were to be married in December.
“The Club is thinking of Teician and the Meates family during this difficult time.”
Investigators said on Monday it appeared the vehicle, which was being driven by Tom’s fiance, veered off the road, struck a guard rail and eventually collided with a Safe T Cam structure at Coolac around 1.10am.
Police have seized the vehicle for mechanical examination and will prepare a report outlining the full circumstances surrounding the crash for the coroner.
