The cold snap across the Riverina hasn't translated to massive falls at our closest ski field but things are looking up, according to Selwyn Snowfields marketing manager Kel Heatley.

“We’ve had five centimetres of snowfall (on Thursday) and we’ve had a good run of snowmaking this week,” Mr Heatley said.

“A year ago we received about 20cm, so that shows the difference.

“We should get some consistent snow falls through July.”

The weather has put a dampener on what is the busiest time of the year for Selwyn – the June school holidays – but Mr Heatley said numbers have still been pretty good.

“(Wednesday and Thursday) have been particularly good. A lot of people have been coming up for the day,” he said.

Riverina Ski Sports runs bus trips up to Selwyn Skifields on Saturdays throughout the ski season, as well as to Falls Creek in Victoria on Sundays. These are dependent on the number of bookings received.

Owner Peter Clucas said it has been quiet, but was hopeful of a better couple of months ahead.

“It’s been a slow start to the season,” Mr Clucas said.

“The forecast is for nine snow days out of the next 14 so it should start to pick up.

“There are good falls also predicted for August.”

The snow levels are in stark contrast from this time last year when June falls were the best since the turn of the century where up to 120cm of white powder was dumped on resorts.

"El Nino’s return has played a part in the inconsistent conditions," Mr Heatley said.

“But it’s on the up from here.

“We have a fantastic system and to make the most of the whatever weather is thrown at us.”

Other ski fields have been feeling the heat as well, with only one day of snowfall recorded at both Falls Creek, and Thredbo in the Kosciuszko National Park over the past fortnight.

Another Victorian resort, Mount Hotham has fared a little better this week, with the mountain receiving 3cm snow dumps over the past four days.
