Construction on the multi-purpose skate park is expected to begin at Chambers Park next month and completed by October.

The project complements the recent upgrade of the park, including a playground that was designed in consultation with residents, Clontarf, police and other government agencies.

“This creates a whole hub there for the neighbourhood,” council’s environmental and community services director, Janice Summerhayes, said.

“As part of the contract, we’ll do more detailed engagement with young people and residents on the final design. It has a really large impact in that its putting recreation space into neighbourhoods where kids live, so they can get to that space. It provides passive, active, health engagement.”

The city’s fourth skate park will be built in Tolland because of the suburb’s large number of young children and families.

“All of this adds to the livability of our city so when we’re attracting people and families to come and live in Wagga, if they know we have this sort of social infrastructure … that’s one more tick for livability in a family-friendly city,” Mrs Summerhayes said.

It’s a sentiment shared by Clontarf’s Mount Austin director, Jermaine Packer.

The foundation, responsible for mentoring young Aboriginal men, was influential in helping to design the Chambers Park upgrade earlier this year.

Mr Packer believes the skate park is another step forward for the community.

“It’s very important, especially for neighbourhoods like Tolland and Ashmont, to get new infrastructure,” he said. 

Mr Packer said you only need to look at how well-used the Ashmont skate park is to gauge how much the city loves these projects.

“I think it’s a great step forward and progress for the community,” he said. “It’s going to give kids options. Instead of kicking the footy at the oval, they can also have the luxury of having a crack at the skate park.”

Councillors awarded the tender of the project in a confidential sitting on Monday night, but the final design will depend on further community engagement.
