Peter Murray, 18, suffered critical injuries and died shortly after the crash.
The Charles Sturt University student recently moved to Wagga from Dubbo.
Mr Murray and the 18-year-old driver were travelling on Pine Gully Road at 2.30am on Saturday morning when the car veered onto the wrong side of the road and crashed into a tree.
The driver suffered serious injuries and was taken to Wagga Base Hospital and later transferred to Sydney.
Police will prepare a report for the coroner and are continuing to investigate the cause of the crash.
Mr Murray’s CSU rugby coach Paul Spain, remembered him as a bright young player who supported his team mates.
“He was just a lovely kid,” Mr Spain said.
“He got involved with the Reddies because he wanted to be part of a club. Two weeks ago at Leeton he was injured, but came on the bus he loved the camaraderie."
CSU held a minutes silence in memory of their team mate before taking on Griffith at Beres Ellwood Oval on Saturday.
