For Crystal Casey it is a daily reality.

The registered nurse has worked at Calvary Hospital for a decade and in the palliative care unit for a number of years.

She sees patients and families through the last phase of their life.

“It’s really lovely to be able to help them in their journey,” Ms Casey said.

“It’s a natural progression.”

Ms Casey watched her mother die when she was nine years old – it was this experience that led her to a career in palliative care.

“We always remembered the nurses – it is a privilege to be able to help someone and look after them at the end.” 

Being surrounded by death takes its toll, but Ms Casey and the other nurses support each other during the toughest times.

“We all go through it together and help pick each other up,” she said. 

Ms Casey’s patients range from the very old to the very young – her ultimate goal is to help them get home.

This week marks palliative care week.
