Wagga father Paul Hallam, who was among the first to pounce on the teen offender, described the scene at Jubilee Park during Thursday’s Paul Kelly Cup as “utter chaos”.
He recalled seeing the 17-year-old joyrider tear across the playing surface at speed, perform a “mono” and lose control of the bike, colliding heavily with an 11-year-old Turvey Park Public School player.
“He was going flat out, he hit her full-on,” Mr Hallam said. “He went over the handlebars and she just hit the deck. I was just on auto-pilot. He (the offender) tried to get up and go and everyone was screaming ‘grab him’. A couple of fathers were on top of him and I came flying over the top and pinned his shoulders.
“Within seconds there were blokes everywhere. A lot of them were ex-footy players so he had no hope.”
The offender yesterday pleaded guilty to a string of charges and was denied bail. The victim remains in a stable condition in Wagga Base Hospital, with three broken ribs, fractures to her lower back, a fractured pelvis and cuts to her leg. Mr Hallam said Thursday’s incident threatened to “spiral out of control” when four supporters of the accused emerged from the bushes.
“They must have been in there watching him ride around and they started yelling at us to get off him,” Mr Hallam said.
“There was a bit of push and shove that went on with some of the dads. Within minutes a few more of them (supporters) came from nowhere.” Police soon arrived and quelled the situation, he said.
