Crawford is one of several special guests set to appear in Wagga as part of the unveiling of the Riverina AFL Team of the Century celebrations.
Crawford, from Finley, has not thought too much about where he fares in team selection, he is simply looking forward to being part of the event.
Crawford is sure of one thing though, that Carey is the biggest certainty of all time.
“I don’t know a great deal about it other than there being a Team of the Century and that there is a lot of good players that have come from the area,” Crawford said.
“There is definitely one guy that I played against that was one of the very best players ever going around and that was Wayne Carey.
“He would be, for me, the only player I ever witnessed could win a game off his own boot.
“He was amazinfg.”
Carey will be up against the likes of Paul Kelly, Terry Daniher, Dennis Carroll and even Crawford as candidates for the captaincy of the team.
Crawford, the 1999 Brownlow Medallist, captained Hawthorn 1999 to 2004.
Crawford has not considered his potential place in the team.
“I’m happy just to be apart of the night,” he said.
“I haven’t even thought about on the night whether I’m in the team, starting in the team or whether I’ve made the interchange.
“It’s great, just for the area, to have so many guys that have gone on to play Aussie rules so successfully.”
Crawford, 40, has a busy role in the media these days, as well as a busy work schedule as AFL Auskick ambassador.
He said he does not get to get back to the Riverina as much as he would like.
“Mum still lives in Finley,” he said.
“I’ve got four young kids and I would like them to experience a lot more of country life.
“It was special for me, growing up in a great little community where everyone is so supportive.
“It hasn’t happened yet but I’d love my boys to experience the lifestyle, I’m sure they would love it and the freedom of it all.”
Crawford will travel up to Wagga tonight for the function.
Tickets are available for $120 a head from the AFL NSW-ACT office.
