On the eve of Cup meeting, Deputy Premier and Racing Minister Troy Grant announced a Special Commission of Inquiry to examine the industry, its management and animal welfare issues.

The inquiry comes after Four Corners’ investigation into the illegal use of live-baiting, and claims of cruelty within the sport –including the shooting and disposal of unwanted dogs.

Mr Grant said the inquiry, which will have royal commission powers, has been initiated in a bid to secure the future integrity of the industry.

“The Inquiry will provide a final report by September, ensuring we have a roadmap for the future of the industry in NSW,” Mr Grant said.

Interim CEO of Greyhound Racing NSW Paul Newson has welcomed the inquiry.

“The Inquiry will review the management and governance of Greyhound Racing NSW including the circumstances that contributed to serious failures in industry supervision," he said.

“Inquiries into allegations of misconduct including mistreatment of animals will continue to be the responsibility of the RSPCA as well as Greyhound Racing NSW overseen by me as its interim CEO.”

As previously reported by The Daily Advertiser in February, Greyhound Racing NSW had not received, nor is it aware of, any reports of incidents of live-baiting in the Riverina area, either currently or in the past.

When questioned by The Daily Advertiser on Thursday about the inquiry's possible reach into regional and rural NSW, Mr Grant’s media office stated the 'scope is still unknown', but investigations "will be NSW-wide."

Lismore trainer Joe Cotroneo, who is acting as Temora Greyhound Racing club caretaker, remains confident the inquiry will not lead to revelations in regional centres, nor will it hinder future meetings.

"The thing is, life has to go on. Even after all this and the actions of some people, life must go on," he said

"We hope there are no silly people who are involved in these things around here.

"Greyhound racing is in good order down here.”
