O-Week celebrations kicked off on Monday night with excited students heading into town having to make the decision between Romano’s Hotel or The Victoria Hotel.
Romano’s has been at capacity each night this week with around 700 patrons partying into the early hours of the morning.
Romano’s manager Wayne Mutton was pleased with the patronage considering pub-goers had to walk a block to get to the venue due to the night roadworks on Fitzmaurice street.
On Wednesday the two venues stepped up their game by offering free food at midnight.
At 5.24pm Romano’s posted to Facebook offering patrons free Macca's at midnight.
Just under 30 minutes later The Vic hit back offering their patrons free food from nearby fast food outlet, JD’s, at midnight via the Facebook page.
The two venues have been in direct competition with each other for years being the two main venues for evening entertainment since the Capital nightclub closed its doors.
Romano’s gave away 200 cheeseburgers and 100 packs of nuggets.
“Everyone likes some food when they’ve been drinking,” Mr Mutton said.
“The new students definitely give the pubs a boost but the whole town benefits.”
CSU O-Week co-ordinator Brandon Harry doesn’t think free food will influence what venue the students go to.
“We know they like the uni dollar but students will make their own decision on where to go,” Mr Harry said.
CSU campus is alcohol free during O-Week. The dry campus is designed to create a closer community.
Alcohol is served in bars around the university but isn’t allowed in on-campus accommodation.
There are five O-Week co-ordinators and 45 leaders organising events including DJs and theme nights.
“They organise O-Week really well all the studnets are really well looked after by RA’s and leaders,” Mr Mutton said.
