TALENTED Wagga footballer Harry Himmelberg has made the move to Canberra in a bid to pursue playing at the highest possible level.
Himmelberg made a big impression at Mangoplah-Cookardinia United-Eastlakes last year despite an interrupted season and has signed with North Eastern Australian Football League (NEAFL) club Eastlake.
Himmelberg, 18, has gained permission to spend another year in Greater Western Sydney's (GWS) Giants Academy and will juggle that with his NEAFL commitments with Eastlake.
Himmelberg also hopes to be chosen as an "over-age" player for NSW-ACT Rams given his 18-year-old season was disrupted early by a broken jaw.
"I want to have another crack at it this year," Himmelberg said.
"I was going pretty well last year before the incident.
"I've spoken with Jason Saddington from the Giants Academy and I'm right to do over age Academy training.
"Hopefully I can be picked by the Rams too."
Himmelberg's family has made the move from Wagga to Brisbane so Harry made the move to Canberra this week.
He believes Canberra is the best place to base himself.
"I'm pretty keen to have a crack and hopefully I can play at a good level with Eastlake in the NEAFL," he said.
"It's easier from Canberra to be able to travel to Sydney, if need be, and there is also direct flights to Brisbane."
Himmelberg recently finished school and will take a gap year to work and juggle his football commitments.
He started last year in sensational fashion and was the early leader in the Riverina League player of the year competition until he was struck down by a broken jaw in round three.
Himmelberg managed to return in quick time but said it stayed with him for longer periods.
"Just my confidence really," he said.
"I would go out there and it was always in the back of my head."
Himmelberg played five games late in the season with GWS Giants' reserve grade team in the NEAFL.
He returned to be an inclusion into the MCUE for the Riverina League grand final.
