SOUTH Wagga captain Joel Robinson believes the first hour of play on Saturday will most likely determine if the Blues can upset Wagga City at Wagga Cricket Ground.

South Wagga is on top as it enters the second day of the clash against the reigning premier and requires a further 89 runs for victory with seven wickets in hand.

Wagga City managed 163 last week and Robinson guided South Wagga to 2-75 at stumps.

The Blues will effective start at 3-75 with Robinson retired on 59 and not to return as he sits out the second day of the match with representative duties.

Dylan Martin takes his place in the team but is unable to bat given Robinson already has.

Robinson leaves knowing the Blues are in a position to win the match.

"I think we are but obviously the first hour is going to be pretty crucial," he said.

"If you look at the game situation now, we're on top at the moment, but if we can get through the first hour and get a bit closer to the target then it's going to put us in good stead."

Grant Forrest was with Robinson at the crease and will resume his innings on Saturday.

South Wagga is yet to decide who will join him at the start of the day.

Robinson is confident there is still plenty of batting to come.

"The most is in the wicket during that first hour so that's going to be hardest time to bat," he said.

"I've got full confidence in the boys coming in.

"Grant Forrest is one of the leading run scorers in the competition and Luke Gerhard is hitting the ball better than anyone in the side."

Robinson acknowledges it is a good chance for a couple of his players to step up.

"There's been a lot of situations over the last couple of years where if we do lose a couple of wickets then we've struggled a little bit," he said.

"I would rather be in this position though than be 3-20 or 3-50.

"We're in as good of a position as we can be."

Wagga City will be out to keep its undefeated start to the season in tact and will look to the likes of captain Jon Nicoll and Dean Crane to lead the attack.
