WAGGA RSL captain Sam Perry knows early wickets are a must if the Bulldogs are to overcome Kooringal Colts at Robertson Oval on Saturday.
Colts are in the box seat heading into the second day of the match after dismissing Wagga RSL for just 110.
Colts are 3-45 in reply and need a further 66 runs for victory with Ben Webster and Harry Perryman at the crease, along with gun batsman David Bolton to come in next.
The Bulldogs have enjoyed an unbeaten start to the season but Perry is under no illusions as to the situation they now find themselves in.
"Last week didn't quite go to plan," Perry said.
"We're going to need a couple of early wickets but that's going to be hard though.
"They've still got Dave Bolton and Keenan (Hanigan) to come so we're going to need two or three early wickets on Saturday.
"Anything can happen."
Perry believes the first breakthrough is vital and labelled the wickets of Webster and Perryman as most important.
"Probably Ben Webster, who is out there now," Perry said when asked which was the key Colts wicket.
"Harry Perryman has been in good form too, he scored 100 in rep cricket last Sunday so he's a big wicket as well.
"It's going to be a battle, especially at Robertson Oval where the outfield is still pretty quick."
Wagga RSL is without Luke Oakley, but regains Dan Oakley for the second day of the match.
Spin did a lot of the damage to Wagga RSL last week, so Perry, a leg spinner, is expected to bowl plenty of overs on Saturday.
He is unsure what the pitch will produce.
"I won the toss and batted last week thinking it was an absolute road," Perry explained.
"I returned to the rooms and when the boys asked what the par score would be I said around 250 to 275.
"One of our openers came back in and then said the pitch was so slow, so we reassessed and said 200, then we bowled out for 110.
"I'll probably start off with our two openers again, then I'll probably come into the attack pretty early.
"Brad McMillan bowls some leg spin as well so he might get an opportunity.
"Riley Corbett was outstanding last week so he'll get a crack again."
With Wagga cricket's two unbeaten teams, Wagga RSL and Wagga City, both on the ropes this round, a big win could catapult Colts from third position.
