Palmer was predominantly a non-playing first grade coach with Waratahs this year, but has decided to pull on the boots again in the Southern Inland Rugby Union premiership in 2015.
Waratahs president Rob Meggison yesterday revealed a family involvement had motivated Palmer to return to the field on a full-time basis.
Speaking to The Daily Advertiser yesterday, Meggison said Palmer's brother would also be playing with Waratahs next year.
"Hughie's brother is coming back from overseas," Meggison said.
"He'll be playing with us and Hughie wants to play alongside him.
"Hugh played the odd couple of games this year, but wants to play more next year."
For Waratahs, Palmer's decision has been the trigger for the Wagga club to start the process of headhunting a coach.
And Meggison is adamant Waratahs has a "particular type" of coach in its sights.
"Hughie did a terrific job as coach, and we're happy with our playing group," Meggison said.
"We just believe we need a particular type of coach for the situation."
Meggison steadfastly refused to hint as to possible candidates for the coveted position at Waratahs, but an appointment may not be far off.
With Waratahs to hold its annual general meeting at Romano's Hotel in Wagga on Wednesday, there is possible scope for the club to make a coaching announcement in the coming weeks.
Meggison is adamant Waratahs is determined to take "another crack" at the SIRU title.
"We'll definitely be pushing forward," he said.
Waratahs finished on top of the SIRU table, collecting the minor premiership, but never made the grand final.
Tahs campaign ended with a 31-19 loss to Albury in the preliminary final.
Meggison believes Tahs have the personnel to challenge for the SITU title.
"We're not looking for players," he said.
"We're happy with the players we've got."
Significantly, playmakers Jayden Stanton will take next year off because of injury, but will co-coach Tahs under-17 team with Nathan Tilden.
