LAKE Albert took a giant step towards its first win of the season with a top effort with the bat against St Michaels at McPherson Oval on Saturday.
Sent into bat by St Michaels, Lake Albert captain Kurt Robertson led the charge as the Bulls were dismissed in the final over of the day for a formidable total of 257.
Robertson took to the Saints' attack and made 93, while five other Bulls batsmen got starts and made between 20 and 35.
Lake Albert vice-captain Isaac Cooper said the score of 257 exceeded the Bulls' expectations.
"After going out there and having a look at the pitch, we were hoping for about 200," Cooper said.
"So to come up with 257 was an awesome effort.
"To get to the 80th over was a big achievement for us after the last couple of weeks with the bat."
It will now be up to Lake Albert's bowlers to do the job next Saturday.
Significantly, Robertson, Brett Davies and Jesse Hampton will all be missing.
Davies has been a late call-up to the Riverina team for the NSW Country Championships after overcoming an injury concern.
Jesse Uhr, Andrew Uhr and Joe Kirk will come into the team.
Cooper recognises the loss of Robertson, Davies and Hampton will prove a challenge for Lake Albert.
"The batsmen did the job this week, so the bowlers will get their chance next week," he said.
"We'll be looking to Nathan Brookes, by the look of the pitch (on Saturday) we think he will be quite dangerous.
"Everyone will get a crack."
Robertson's 93 came off 150 deliveries.
He hit six fours and one six before being bowled by Jordan Lawrence late in the innings.
Matt Tom opened the innings and scored an unbeaten 35.
He retired hurt with a bruised hand but returned for the last wicket.
Chase Grintell did the most damage with the ball for St Michaels and claimed 4-51 off 15 overs.
