Defence signed a $1.3 billion contract with Medibank Health Solutions (MHS) to deliver a comprehensive suite of five health service packages to ADF personnel nationally in June, 2012.
MHS terminated its two-year contract with optical service provider Luxottica in July this year and entered into a new arrangement with Specsavers for the delivery of optometry services to the ADF nationally from August 7.
"The contract is for an initial term of four years and four months, ending on October 31, 2016," a Defence spokeswoman said.
"There are also two one-year extension options to Defence in the contract.
"The contract consists of five service packages: on-base, off-base, health hotline, pathology and imaging and radiology.
"Optometry services are delivered as part of the off-base services component."
All ADF personnel will have access to Specsavers stores in line with existing healthcare entitlements, but the spokeswoman couldn't disclose how much the contract was for.
"As a major employer within the Wagga region, Defence is committed to ensuring that ADF personnel have access to the very best healthcare available including access to optometry services," the spokeswoman said.
A Specsavers spokeswoman confirmed the contract with Medibank to provide optical services to the ADF gave the Wagga store another avenue for supporting the community and ensured Australia's defence force had access to the best eye care possible, but also opted not to disclose the finances.
"As home to the Royal Australian Air Force and Kapooka Army Recruit Training Base, Specsavers Wagga is delighted (it) has entered into this service agreement," she said.
Wagga Specsavers retail manager Richard Skidmore, among the eight staff of two optometrists, clarified the contract would allow recruits access to eyecare if and when the ADF medical officer saw fit.
"Obviously everyone is delighted and thrilled to get the contract," he said.
