MURRUMBIDGEE Turf Club is on the hunt for horses for Tuesday's 3200 metre staying test - the Mountaineer Cup at Wagga.
MTC chief executive Scott Sanbrook was busy working the phones on Wednesday in a bid to find more horses for one of the unique feature events at Wagga's Melbourne Cup day race meeting.
Only four horses were nominated for the $7000 Kooringal Stud Mountaineer Cup Benchmark 60 Handicap (3200m) with nominations extended until 11am Thursday.
Four horses competed in the inaugural Mountaineer Cup last year and Sanbrook hopes the field can stand up with the same amount of horses again.
"We've got four and there has been a bit of interest shown, mainly from Victoria," Sanbrook said.
"We're hoping to get a couple more late noms before they close.
"We would really like to see four or more acceptors to ensure the race goes ahead."
Any less than four acceptors and the 3200 metre event could become in danger or being scrapped.
"If we got three acceptors or less, there's a chance the race wouldn't go ahead," Sanbrook said.
"The club would look at it in consultation with Racing NSW but we'll do everything we can to make sure the race goes ahead."
The Tim Donnelly-trained Traded is the only NSW representative among the four nominations.
Traded has been racing consistently since returning to the Donnelly yard after a brief stint jumping.
Two of the nominations come from the yard of Mt Eliza trainer Maxine Fraser, while Benalla trainer Tim Grace has nominated Budget Blowout.
In total, MTC received 39 nominations for the five-race card.
"I don't think you can expect too many more horses on Melbourne Cup day given the number of meetings on, not only in the SDRA but surrounding associations as well," Sanbrook said.
"With so many meetings on, we're happy we've got 40 noms.
"It was good to get seven horses in the greys race, that should be a great spectacle."
Corowa Racing Club blew rival clubs away with 110 nominations for its six-race card.
Albury Racing Club got 46 nominations for its five-race card.
The attention will now turn to securing jockeys.
Wagga has already got John Kissick, Adam Gain, Bryan Murphy, Brett Fliedner, Megan Taylor and Tara-Jane Mitchell riding.
Albury has confirmed it already has Simon Miller, Joel Maconachie, Michael Heagney and Lily Coombe riding, while Amanda Masters will ride at Corowa.
