Mrs Thomas, who hails from Holy Trinity School in Inverell, yesterday visited Mater Dei for the first time.
She will begin her appointment in January.
Mrs Thomas joined the Diocese of Wagga Wagga after spending more than 20 years working for schools within the Diocese of Armidale.
A passion for regional education drew her to Wagga where she hopes to stay and leave her mark.
"Wagga is a beautiful city and I love the community spirit," Mrs Thomas said.
She praised the dynamic educational culture of Mater Dei, commenting on its commitment to delivering quality modern education.
"I'm drawn to the college's passion for education that offers quality learning opportunities for young people in regional areas," Mrs Thomas said.
"I was looking for a position in this diocese, there is a wonderful priority for faith, learning and care; contemporary learning," she said.
Outgoing principal Greg Miller, who has served the school for seven years, is moving to Sydney to work with the Diocese of Broken Bay.
As a secondary schools consultant, he will lead a cluster of schools and work with eight principals.
Mr Miller, a former colleague of Mrs Thomas, said he enjoyed witnessing students' "very special achievements in learning, sport and arts" during his tenure.
He wished Mrs Thomas well, praising both her ability and commitment.
"Val will value add to the wonderful community and strengthen it," he said.
Mrs Thomas will officially begin her role as principal in 2015.
