A TOWERING six by Ben Armour on the last ball of the match was enough to get Wagga City's premiership off to a winning start.
Needing four runs off the last ball, Armour stood up when it matter most hitting Luke Hillier's last ball over the boundary at McPherson Oval on Saturday.
In a thrilling finish to the game, the Cats scored 11 runs off Hillier's last over to defeat Kooringal by four wickets.
The Colts nearly sprung an upset to start the season and after batting first, David Bolton led the way for Kooringal.
Top scoring with 69 runs off 92 balls, the Colts set a competitive target of 169 from their 40 overs.
Bolton joined Jeremy Bunn in a fifth wicket partnership of 55 before the opener was dismissed by Cats captain-coach Jon Nicoll.
Nicoll took the wickets of both openers, with Andrew Dutton failing for four, before leading the way with the bat for Wagga City.
Batting at number four, Nicoll scored 56 but fell to Keenan Hanigan when the Cats still needed 31 more runs for victory.
Nicoll said the match ebbed and flowed before Armour and Cane Greatz were able to see out the victory.
"You felt as though we were on top then they were on top and both sides batted really well," he said.
"We were able to just get over the line in the end and at the end of the day a win is a win and you'll take them not matter how you get them."
Coming into the game without top line bowlers Dean Crane and Dom Alexander, Wagga City needed its younger brigade to step up.
The Cats had two teenagers playing their first game, with 15-year-old Jack Harper (14) the last man to fall.
Nicoll opened the bowling with 16-year-old Brad Yeomans, making his first grade debut.
To win without some of the club's big names was the most pleasing aspect for Nicoll/
"I think one of the most pleasing things was we didn't have Dean Crane or Dom Alexander," he said.
"To get away with a win on a really good batting track is really pleasing.
"We found ways to win, which was good and young Jack Harper was outstanding at the end with Ben Armour.
"To have two of our youngest players go on to win the game just highlights how good this group is."
Wagga City will take on Lake Albert next Saturday after the Bulls fell to Wagga RSL.
