North Wagga Brittany Fitzsimmons yesterday revealed a group of close sporting mates had gone a long way to performing a sporting miracle with the Saints.
"It was all about friendship," Fitzsimmons said yesterday.
"We all knew each other and just decided to play at North Wagga together."
Coming together from several Farrer League clubs, the new-look North Wagga team has made a remarkable impact on the A grade premiership this year.
After struggling for even the slightest success in 2013, the Saints team finished rock bottom on the A grade table.
Fast forward 12 months, and North Wagga is the toast of the Farrer League A grade netball competition after qualifying for the grand final at Maher Oval on Saturday week.
Fresh from finishing third on the ladder, North Wagga toppled East Wagga Kooringal in the qualifying final a fortnight ago before stunning minor premier CSU 35-34 last weekend.
Making the spectacular move from the sporting basement to the penthouse, North Wagga is now within one victory of the Saints first A grade netball title in modern times.
"No one can remember the last time North Wagga won A grade," Fitzsimmons said.
"We know we have a long way to go.
"I reckon we're still the underdogs.
"Two wins in the finals doesn't change what happened during the season."
Despite boasting a fresh pool of players, North Wagga is not a team of rookies, with a "few girls" sharing The Rock Yerong Creek's A grade triumph last year.
As much as the Saints team fell neatly into place, Fitzsimmons says the premiership bid has been built on doing "the hard yards".
"We've trained Tuesday and Thursday every week," she said.
"Everyone had put in the hard yards."
With the weekend off as CSU and East Wagga Kooringal joust in the preliminary final for the vacant spot in the grand final, the North Wagga players will not rest on its laurels.
Fitzsimmons said the team would train tonight and play a "practice match" on Saturday.
"We'll also be going to have a look at the preliminary final," she said.
For the Saints, the prospect of climbing off the canvas to win the Farrer League title would put the team in elevated company.
Rarely has a team gone from last to first in consecutive years.
In stark contrast, Brothers rugby league in the Group Nine Leaguetag competition is chasing a record fourth straight grand final victory this year - and has not lost a game in three
