A NARRANDERA man who drove through town at high speed while drunk in a car that had no doors, no bonnet, no tail lights and no boot lid has been jailed.
Damien Dwayne Greedy, 35, was sentenced in Wagga Local Court on Monday for offences he committed in Narrandera on March 22.
He was also sentenced for failing to appear in Narrandera Local Court on June 20 to face the charges.
Police facts tendered to the court said police driving in East Street about 2.38am on March 22 saw an EL Ford Falcon headed towards them at high speed with no headlights on.
The police car headlights showed a shirtless Greedy behind the wheel.
The officers turned on their emergency lights, did a u-turn and followed Greedy but he continued at high speed through several streets.
The facts said Greedy drove on the wrong side of the road at the intersection of East Street and the Newell Highway and in Elwin Street.
Greedy stopped the car in Whitton Lane and ran off, but was caught by other police officers in Elwin Street.
The police facts said Greedy returned a blood alcohol reading of .134 and his licence had already been disqualified to April 27, 2027.
Police described the unregistered car Greedy was driving as dangerously defective.
"While traffic was minimal at the time, there was an extreme level of danger to the public," police told the court.
They said Greedy was well-affected by alcohol at the time of the incident.
Greedy pleaded guilty to police pursuit, mid-range drink-driving, driving while disqualified and failing to appear in accordance with a bail undertaking.
He was given a head sentence of 12 months with a non-parole period of nine months, backdated to June 24, for the police pursuit.
Greedy was also disqualified from driving for another three years, taking his ban out to 2030.
Greedy was placed on conditional good behaviour bonds for the drink-driving, driving while disqualified and failing to appear offences.
He was also disqualified from driving for those offences, but all three new bans will be served concurrently.
A previous good behaviour bond given to Greedy for an assault was revoked and a new bond for two years imposed from Monday.
