Coolamon unveils its best team of the past 40 years

COOLAMON unveiled its star-studded team of the past 40 years as part of the club's 120 year anniversary celebrations on Saturday night.

More than 150 guests turned out to the function at St Michaels Hall where the focus was on the most recent 40 years as part of the celebrations for 120 years of Coolamon's football club.

Former AFL star Wayne Weidemann may have been absent but it did not stop him from featuring heavily as he was named starting ruck rover and coach of the 1974-2014 Coolamon team.

Coolamon's latest premiership coach Matt Hard was named the team captain.

Only two present day players were named in the team, those being Jim Quinn Medallists Jamie Maddox and Luke Maloney.

Murray Stephenson, at age 21, was named at full-back.

He joined South Australian National Football League (SANFL) club Central District this season after last year's premiership win.

Hard said it was an honour to be named in such a team, let alone as captain.

"It's definitely good but you don't expect to get in these sort of sides," Hard said.

"Again, (being named captain) is not something that I'm real comfortable with, just because there is a lot of good people and a lot of good leaders that have been at the club."

Hard said the concept of naming such a team was a great thing for the club.

"All went well, it was a good night and it was well received," he said.

"I'm sure it will provide great discussion down the track.

"I know all the players were very appreciative of it and it's one of those things that will add a lot of history to the footy club."

Hard, who coached Stephenson in last year's premiership team, endorsed the young defender's selection.

"Absolutey, with just 50 games that's a huge achievement," he said.

"He obviously had a breakout year last year but the selection speaks volumes of him."
