Southern District Racing Association stewards Troy Vassallo and John Davidson inspected the Gundagai track yesterday and later "deemed" it safe for racing at the weekend.
The stewards, however, also stressed to Gundagai-Adelong officials that further rain could put the program under serious threat.
Speaking to The Daily Advertiser yesterday, Vassallo said the club had been told to inform stewards if more rain fell at the track between now and and Sunday.
"They don't want any more rain," Vassallo said.
"If there happens to be over five mils we'll go down before Sunday and inspect the track and make an assessment."
With the fate of Sunday's meeting in the balance, Vassallo said there was no back up plan for the program to be switched to another venue in the SDRA.
"There are no alternatives," he said.
Earlier this month, a scheduled Gundagai-Adelong meeting was transferred to the MTC in Wagga, but this is not an option for Sunday.
The MTC is scheduled to race only five days later and, given an already busy winter schedule, the track would not be able to cope with the workload of another meeting on a rain-affected surface.
Vassallo and Davidson yesterday "walked" the circumference of the racing surface at Gundagai before giving the meeting the tentative all-clear to go ahead.
"The track was deemed safe for racing," he said.
"It is a heavy 10 (at the moment)."
Amid forecasts of fine conditions for today, Saturday and Sunday, there is a "80% chance" of storms around Gundagai on Friday.
For Gundagai-Adelong, the prospect of losing Sunday's card will be a bitter blow.
The club has worked hard to recover from hardship caused by flooding and officials are keen for the meeting to go ahead as planned.
A hefty 157 nominations have been received for Sunday's seven-race card, which is the only major sporting event in the town for the day.
Gundagai rugby league club has the Group Nine premiership bye on Sunday, leaving the race club with no serious opposition.
Canberra trained Road Fox, a winner of two of his last four starts, yesterday landed top weight of 59kg for Sunday's feature event, the Gundagai District Services Club Benchmark 58 Handicap (1180n).
Road Fox is prepared by Mark Schmetzer and won first-up from a spell at Wagga on July 5 before finishing a tight second to Wheely Wilson at Dubbo on July 21, making up considerable ground.
