Essential Energy said a rat "came into contact with the network" on Lonergan Place about 10pm on Monday.
The contact created a fault on the high voltage network that demanded urgent repairs, Essential Energy's southern regional manager Steven Ilitch said.
Customers in parts of Wagga's central business district, including Tarcutta, Gurwood, Fitzmaurice and Baylis streets, were affected.
Repair crews from Essential Energy's Wagga depot were sent out to find the fault and repair it.
Power was progressively restored to affected buildings until all customers had electricity by 1.30am Tuesday.
The blackout caused complications with Wagga City Council's fire alarm system resulting in a number of fire engines being sent to the civic centre.
