The man was taken to Wagga Base Hospital with only a suspected broken arm and nose after extricating himself from the vehicle unassisted.
But given the state of his vehicle after the accident, which occurred at the intersection of Pearson and Bye streets, it could have been much worse for the man.
Smash repairer Craig Glasson, who towed away the other vehicle involved in the accident - a Mitsubishi Triton ute - said it was lucky more people weren't seriously injured.
"It's probably one of the largest or the most damage done to a vehicle in a built-up area that I've seen," he said.
"It's an accident you usually see out on the highway."
According to witnesses, the Holden Statesman was travelling well in excess of the 60km/h speed limit along Pearson Street when it collided with the ute.
He then attempted to walk away from the scene before being detained by witnesses until police and paramedics arrived.
Police are also investigating whether alcohol played a role in the accident, with a strong smell of liquor emanating from the man as he was being loaded into an ambulance by paramedics.
The Mitsubishi Triton also sustained damage in the accident but its five occupants - a 36-year-old man and four young children - escaped uninjured.
