It’s the declaration clubs have been half fearing, half expecting for weeks – monster New Zealand prop Hayden Davis has re-signed with Kangaroos.
Arguably the competition’s most physically imposing player, Davis is Kangaroos’ stellar offseason signing and the final piece to the Wagga club’s puzzle.
Speaking to The Daily Advertiser yesterday, Hall admitted luring the hulking front-rower back to the club had always been his biggest goal of the off-season.
“There is no player like Hayden Davis,” he said.
“We looked everywhere for a big prop but no one was as good as him.
“It was an important for us to get him to sign.”
Groomed in rugby league in New Zealand, the powerpacked enforcer boasts an enviable pedigree that saw him play in Orange and Queensland before his debut in the Group Nine competition last year.
With his enormous frame, combined with skill and unexpected athleticism, Davis made an immediate impression on the competition.
“Every person I talk to outside Roos asks me if Hayden Davis is coming back before they even ask how I am,” Hall admitted.
“He is such an intimidating player and everyone knows the type of player he is and what he brings to a team.
“He lifts everyone in the side just by being there and really gets the younger boys motivated.
“He wants to be in every play and he expects so much of himself. He really leads by example.”
In what was a huge blow to Roos last year, the barnstorming ball runner made the difficult decision to leave the Wagga club midway through the season due to family commitments.
He made a brief return to Wagga in the final stages of the competition, to play the last two games of the season and make an appearance for Roos in the club’s semi-final showdown with Cootamundra.
Sure to instil further trepidation into rival players facing a showdown with Davis, Hall yesterday revealed the muscular forward is well and truly primed for Roos’ opening clash with Brothers on Anzac Day at Robertson Oval.
Davis has been undertaking pre-season training with a New Zealand Rugby League National Competition – formerly Bartercard Premiership – team.
“This is like New Zealand’s premier competition,” Hall said.
“He is raring to go.”
Davis will arrive in Wagga a week before Kangaroos open their Group Nine campaign on April 25.
