Mr Crain, 30, died after falling from a power pole near Copland Street shortly after 12.30pm on Sunday.
He had scaled the power pole in an attempt to evade police, who had been pursuing him after detecting a Holden Commodore he was travelling in allegedly speeding along Tasman Road.
It's believed that he touched a transmitter while atop the power pole, which shocked him and caused him to fall 25 metres to the ground.
According to police, while details were being obtained from the driver, Mr Crain fled the vehicle and climbed the power pole.
Police attempted to direct him to climb down and a short time later he fell to the ground.
The incident, and the role played by police in the tragedy, are now being investigated by a critical incident team, comprising officers from the Cootamundra Local Area Command.
The investigation will be reviewed by an independent officer and overseen by the police's Southern Region Command.
Several of Mr Crain's friends and family have taken to Facebook since Sunday to offer their condolences to his family.
Funeral details for Mr Crain are yet to be finalised.
