About 12.30pm, an officer from the Traffic and Highway Patrol Command detected a Holden Commodore allegedly travelling at excessive speed along Tasman Road.
The officer activated their warning lights and stopped the car a short time later on Copland Street.
While obtaining details from the driver, the 30-year-old man ran from the vehicle and climbed a nearby power pole.
The man ignored directions to climb down and a short time later he fell to the ground.
The man was assessed by NSW Ambulance Paramedics but died at the location.
A crime scene was established at the eastern end of Copland Street with a number of roads closed in the area.
Inquiries into the matter are continuing.
A Critical Incident Team, comprising officers from Cootamundra Local Area Command, will now investigate the full circumstances surrounding the incident, including the actions of police.
This will be reviewed by an independent officer and oversighted by the Southern Region Command.
All information will be provided to the Coroner who will determine the cause of death and make any findings about the events leading to the man’s death.
Police have appealed for witnesses to come forward.
Anyone who can assist police should contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
