SOUTHERN Inland Rugby Union's first representative women's sevens team came home with their first piece of silverware on Saturday.
The 10-strong team finished as Bowl winners after defeating Breakers 15-10 in the final to ensure a fifth place finish in the Queanbeyan Sevens tournament.
After losing both pool matches to Phoenix 20-10 and NSW Barbarians 30-5 the SIRU team found their rhythm, earning a place in the Bowl final with a dominant 30-0 win over Jindabyne.
Coach Jack Burey was pleased by how the team progressed throughout the day, improving their confidence with each match.
"We were a bit nervous and rusty early and probably should have won the first game, but they got better as the day went on," Burey said.
"Against the NSW (Barbarians) side we were outclassed a bit, they had a few Australian players in there."
Beck Lally and Bailey Porter were the standouts, with Porter making her debut playing sevens and is yet to align herself with a SIRU team in what will be the second year of the women's competition.
The SIRU representative will now go to the Kiama Sevens tournament on February 22, where they can further push their case from selection in the ACT team that will compete in the national championships in March.
