NORTHERN Jets have dropped a Farrer League bombshell in announcing the shock return of former club coach Michael Wheatley.
Jets committeeman and recruiter Terry Walker yesterday made the revelation when contacted by The Daily Advertiser.
Wheatley played for RFL club Turvey Park before taking up the coaching role at the Jets in 2010, which he occupied for two seasons before leaving the club.
He led them to the semi finals in his debut year but tumbled out of the top five in 2011 before stepping down.
Wheatley has now returned and will play under first-year coach Stu Hutchins as the Jets fight to better last year's preliminary final exit.
Walker was excited to let the cat out of the bag.
"It's great news," Walker said after revealing Wheatley's signing.
"Michael adds that bit of hardness for us across halfback or through the midfield, and being a former coach he brings those leadership skills as well.
"He's a very good pick-up for us."
Wheatley is a tough midfielder-utility and Walker hinted at playing him at either centre halfback or off a flank during the season.
He has reportedly moved back to the area for work and was keen to have another crack with the Jets.
Wheatley was unable to be contacted by the Advertiser yesterday for comment.
His signing highlights a list of four new "ins" for the club revealed yesterday.
Wheatley joins former Coolamon talents Mick Keatley, Luke McLoughlin and Alex Rogers on the Jets' incoming roster, which already includes Jason Coombes and John Preston.
Walker is also hoping to announce a new assistant coach in the coming weeks.
The Jets had about 30 players attend the first training run on Friday night as Hutchins officially began his job as coach.
The club expects to play West Wyalong and at least one more trial before the Farrer League season kicks off, but is yet to confirm dates.
The Jets begin their season proper by travelling to play The Rock-Yerong Creek on April 12.
