After a review of design layouts by key stakeholders including the Police Citizens Youth Club (PCYC) at both local and state level Wagga City Council resolved at its meeting on Monday night to endorse one of three options to progress to the next stage.
The preferred option is a single storey structure, which will cover 1725 square metres and extend into the current parking area.
All facilities being on the one level, food preparation close to the convention space and plans that mask the existing building were all listed as pros.
Council also agreed on Monday night to enter into an agreement with the PCYC for the development and operation of its facilities at the stadium.
Councillor Greg Conkey told the meeting a "tremendous amount " of community input had gone into decision making concerned with the multipurpose stadiums (MPS) both at Equex and Bolton Park.
"It hasn't been easy, these projects are all about consensus," Cr Conkey said.
Mayor Rod Kendall echoed that view saying anyone who wanted to participate had been given ample opportunity.
He said the consultation had "gone a long way" to alleviating concerns over whether the stadiums would provide adequate business convention facilities.
"The outcomes have a good level of support generally throughout the community," Cr Kendall said.
At its meeting in July council resolved to accept a tender from the Architectus Group Pty Ltd for the design of the stadiums at a cost of $290,950. During the design phase of the MPS project, Architectus and council staff engaged with 32 separate groups and organisations on design layouts and possible inclusions.
The consultation led to the development of three in-principle design layouts at both locations, with plans for the new three-court indoor stadium at Equex endorsed for detailed design at council's October meeting.
