FORMER Tumut deputy mayor Ben Dumbrell has died in an ultralight plane crash near Adelong.
Police have confirmed Mr Dumbrell, 65, died at the scene.
Officers were called to a Califat Road property about 6.15am after a crashed plane was located by its manager with a deceased pilot inside.
Mr Dumbrell's family reported him missing on Sunday night when he hadn't been heard from since heading for Holbrook on Saturday morning.
The well-known and respected member of the Tumut community, was an experienced pilot and has flown aircraft from the age of 24.
Officers attached to Cootamundra Local Area Command have established a crime scene, which is being examined by specialist officers.
The cause of the crash is not yet known however it is believed to have occurred shortly after take-off.
The Australian Transport Safety Bureau is at the scene and a report is being prepared for the Coroner.
