EAST Wagga-Kooringal has landed its first recruitment coup under new coach Gavin McMahon with the signature of talented utility Daniel Davey.
The Hawks announced the signing of Davey yesterday, a former EWK junior that the Hawks have convinced to return to his home club.
Davey is a talented utility that has predominantly played across half-back, but can also play through the midfield and up forward.
He spent the past season not playing football but was an integral member of Wagga Tigers’ premiership team in 2007 and played at Tigerland up until this year.
The news comes after a positive week for the club where it named McMahon as its new coach and also re-signed Chris Jackson as a player.
McMahon was pleased to secure the services of Davey.
“It’s an East Wagga junior coming home,” McMahon said.
“That’s our thing at the moment, we want to try and attract as many juniors back to the club as possible.”
McMahon said Davey’s likely starting position next year will be determined by what the Hawks are able to recruit.
“That’s one of the best things about him,” McMahon said.
“He’s a real handful for anyone in a number of positions.
“I’m pretty pumped up about it. Recruiting is a pretty tough gig so to be able to sign someone like him, a key position player that can also go through the midfield is a great get.”
Davey, 25, said he was looking forward to a new challenge.
“Gav approached me a few weeks ago and said he was thinking about heading out there and asked me if I would go with him,” Davey said.
“I like Gav, I get along with him really well and like the way he likes to play his footy.
“It was back to the junior club so it should be good.
“I’ve sat out a year and I’m keen to get back into it and it should be a bit of a challenge.”
Davey sat out this season due to work commitments.
He played from under 10s to 16s at EWK before moving to Wagga Tigers to play under 18s in the then AFL Canberra competition.
