Dozens of volunteers across the Riverina donated their time to sell thousands of dollars in merchandise, which will go to helping fund research to end the disease. 

South West communication and events co-ordinator Laura Corcoran was delighted with the response and some incredible acts of kindness. 

Gumly couple Colin and Helen Meyers cut hundreds of daffodils from their garden, which they donated to the South West Cancer Council. 

The gesture resulted in numerous donations. 

“We were really lucky; what they did was incredibly kind,” Ms Corcoran said. 

Wagga couple Margaret and Trevor Polsen were two of the volunteers who helped sell the flowers. 

Mr Polsen lost his mother to tongue cancer while Mrs Polson’s siblings passed away from breast cancer and leukaemia. 

Every year they set aside time to support Daffodil Day as their way of standing up to cancer. 

“I am more than happy to be out here doing my bit,” Mrs Polson said. 

“It is a great cause.”

They were some of the volunteers who had to brave the cold, wet weather following a slip-up between Wagga City Council and the Cancer Council. 

Under council’s footpath policy, the merchandise stall wasn’t allowed to be set up along the main street. 

Stall volunteers were told by a ranger to move their table, with the Storehouse Cafe happily accommodating them in its outside dining area. 

Council’s manager of environmental sustainability and regulatory services Mark Gardiner said the request for the volunteers to move was done out of safety. 

“The policies are put in place for a reason and our staff have to work within the guidelines,” he said.

“We have to maintain the walkway for pedestrians and while we have a capacity for stalls along the main street we need to achieve a balance. 

“We didn’t ask them to stop, we just needed them to fill out the paperwork and ensure the walkway wasn’t narrowed.”

Ms Corcoran said council was helpful and supportive of their situation.
