COLEAMBALLY coach Andrew McGown is bracing himself for the worst possible news which would bring an end to his playing career.
McGown will receive scans on his left knee next week, which he is expecting will confirm a torn anterior cruciate ligament (ACL).
If confirmed, McGown says he will hang the boots up for good.
“That will be the end of it,” McGown said yesterday.
“With the injuries I’ve had, I’ve played every game half fit and I’m just over it.”
McGown received a knock to the body in the dying stages of Saturday’s loss to CSU and felt his knee “pop out”.
During the 2011 season he had torn his ACL but sidestepped an operation, and had to undergo a full reconstruction when he ruptured it at the start of last year.
He is confident next week’s scans will bring bad news.
“It feels exactly like it did last time,” he said.
“I won’t know for sure until I get scans but it feels very similar.
“It’s a bit disappointing, I think I only had about five games to go until I got to 250 for the club. That will be my career over, I’d say.”
McGown has had a horror string of injuries in recent years, battling knee and shoulder problems while playing limited football for the Blues.
He has been consulting doctors in Albury this season in an effort to get on the field each week.
McGown has informed the club it should begin searching for a new coach for 2014.
“I think I’ll give it (coaching) away next year,” he said.
“I’ve been doing it for two years and haven’t got the results.
“I had a brief talk to the president last week and told him I probably won’t do it again.”
Coleambally will spend the next three weeks battling to avoid the Farrer League wooden spoon.
Graham O’Connell is expected to be sidelined this week after injuring his hamstring on Saturday.
