The significance of the moment was obvious by the attendance of the head of the United Supreme Grand Chapter of Mark and Royal Arch Masons of NSW and ACT, Most Excellent Companion Edward Keenahan.
He is one of the top figures in the Freemason hierarchy in Australia.
“This particular chapter has been in recess for four years now,” he said yesterday.
“Local members have come to the conclusion they really need to revive it.”
Last night, Leeton’s Very Excellent Companion Roger Whitehead was installed as the new First Principal of the Chapter.
Mr Keenahan rejected the suggestion the Freemason fraternity is shrouded in secrecy.
“Masonic organisations are all about developing the individual and helping the community by developing the man,” he said.
Mr Keenahan said one of the benefits of becoming a member was that you could meet fellow Masons all over the world and they would treat you as their brother.
