THE Riverina Anglican College skipper Dougal Howard capped off one of his greatest football wins by being named best on ground in last night’s Carroll Cup final.
Howard was awarded the Mark Gooden Medal following his team’s 6.6 (42) to 4.9 (33) win over Mater Dei at Robertson Oval.
He was presented the medal by Mark’s daughter Caitlin Gooden before presenting his teammates with their winning medals to finalise his duties as captain.
Howard was almost lost for words following the game and could not believe he was awarded best on ground.
“Really happy, stoked,” he said.
“You probably could have given it to 10 other fellas, but I’m stoked.
“It’s bloody unreal.
“First win for TRAC, everyone’s stoked and everyone’s having a great time.”
Howard was the lynchpin for TRAC in the first half, switching onball to forward and kicking two consecutive goals in the second quarter to draw level with Mater Dei at half-time.
He had the chance to ice the game with a brilliant run and kick in the last quarter but unluckily hit the post for a behind.
He said the entire school was thrilled with the victory.
“We always knew it was going to be tough, they were favourites and probably the better team,” Howard said.
“But we knew we had to put our heads over the footy, go hard and not stop.
“I guess that’s what got us there in the end, running all day.”
Howard enjoyed a solid campaign for TRAC and led the team to its first final and Cup win.
