Devout AFL supporters, the Gett brothers were hand selected by the Lions to be the official mascots after winning a competition with The Daily Advertiser this week.
Leading the Lions out onto the field will be even more special for Toby, who turned his back on a long-held family tradition to support them a few years ago.
“It’s a funny story, Toby goes for the Brisbane Lions,” said mum Elizabeth yesterday.
“We have a bit of a family tradition, the first grandparent to buy the new child some sort of football paraphernalia, that’s the team they go for.
“My sister actually bought him Swans stuff so he followed the Swans for a few years, but then he picked the Lions, he completely went against family tradition.
“I think he picked the Lions because they’re a cool animal, but the rest of the family started supporting him in going for the Lions.
“He still gets Swans stuff from my sister though.”
The brothers are set to start playing Auskick in Albury this year, but Elizabeth said they are already competitive.
So much so, Charlie will cheer on GWS tonight to avoid showing support for Toby’s team.
“They’re only 11 months apart but they’re quite competitive with each other,” she said.
“Charlie goes for the Tigers but he’s barracking for the Giants just so he can be different to Toby.
“They’re really excited though, they spend a lot of time around footy so I don’t think they’ll get nervous or anything.”
Originally, Toby’s efforts with the best lion face caught the attention of the competition judges, but the AFL generously agreed to kit out Charlie to make it a family affair.
The boys will be decked out in Lions gear and will also get to mingle with the players before the game.
