The most promising forward combination in the AFL is set to be unleashed as part of a strong Giants squad to take on the Brisbane Lions at Robertson Oval.
GWS announced its squad for the round two NAB Cup game at Wagga yesterday, with captain Callan Ward and former Carlton defender Bret Thornton among the inclusions.
Earlier in the week, GWS said Cameron was unlikely to play alongside Patton in the Giants’ forward line after he pulled up sore from last weekend’s opening round.
But in a huge boost for Wagga’s drought-breaking NAB Cup game, Cameron was named as a shock starter next to Patton in attack for the Giants.
GWS senior assistant coach Leon Cameron said there was several exciting aspects to the Giants’ squad.
“We’ve got a couple of big names resuming and none bigger than our captain Callan Ward,” Cameron said.
“We all love Callan and the way he goes about his footy and it’s great to see him back. We’ve also got a mature age recruit coming in with Bret Thornton. We’re very much looking forward to seeing what he can produce for the Giants.”
Tom Scully will miss the clash with a minor knee injury, while Phil Davis and Curtly Hampton will be rested for the week due to workload issues.
In a further sign of how serious GWS is treating tomorrow night’s game, just four of the seven Riverina-bred Giants will play – Jacob Townsend, Kurt Aylett, Anthony Miles and Mark Whiley.
“To have Anthony Miles, Kurt Aylett, Jacob Townsend, and Mark Whiley all from the Riverina playing this weekend and representing our footy club is great and they’re very much looking forward to strutting their stuff on Saturday night,” Cameron said.
“This is a big event for Wagga and the Giants are proud of our partnership with the city, which has a great sporting history, and we look forward to playing in front a capacity crowd at Robertson Oval.”
Brisbane Lions also announced a squad full of big names with the likes of co-captain Jed Adcock, Brent Moloney, Tom Rockliff, Matt Maguire and Dayne Zorko all set to play.
