AN INFLUENTIAL power player in the Robertson Oval upgrade, GWS coach Kevin Sheedy insists he's excited about laying eyes on the finished product tomorrow.
Ahead of Saturday's NAB Cup clash with Brisbane Lions, the Giants will arrive in Wagga to officially open the multimillion-dollar redevelopment at a ceremony tomorrow night.
Speaking to The Daily Advertiser yesterday, Sheedy said he was excited for the Riverina to finally reap the benefits of the upgrade.
"I'm looking forward to it," he said yesterday.
"There's no doubt about going down to Wagga, this weekend's going to be pretty exciting. I've been there a couple of times and obviously took the Bombers there many, many years ago, and now that the investment (is complete), the lights are up and Wagga's got an AFL match and an AFL team is going there, it'll be great for all the clubs in the region.
"I hope the fans come along."
In Sydney yesterday, Sheedy said the Giants are coming to Wagga with a clear intention to force it's way into the NAB Cup finals with a win over the undefeated Lions.
Having won one of their two games in the opening round, Sheedy said the Giants are "desperate" to make a play for the finals this campaign.
"We've selected the team virtually and it won't be that much difference, maybe three or four changes," he said.
"In comes the captain Callum Ward and in comes Jacob Townsend who won the coaches player of the year last year, so we're bringing a couple of serious blokes in for one or two boys who've got a couple of sore spots.
"So we'll have a damn good side ourselves, we're pretty keen to win, we want to get into the finals of the NAB Cup.
“I think the AFL has got two pretty desperate teams from two desperate clubs who want to win because obviously the Lions haven’t been in the finals for a while and we’re in our second year.”
As expected, the Giants are determined to showcase their home-grown Riverina talent in Saturday’s game.
Sheedy believes Kurt Aylett (Leeton), Mark Whiley (Finley) and Anthony Miles (Albury) will play a major part in the Giants line-up this season.
“I’ll let you know early that southern NSW will be well represented along with Jeremy Cameron and Patton and these sorts of boys up forward.”
