A recommendation was last night put forward at the Infrastructure Services Standing Committee meeting, stating that for the purpose of public consultation, council should endorse the proposed levels of protection which will see the main city levee bank upgraded to the equivalent of a one-in-100-year average recurrence interval (ARI) flood event or 11.3-metre river height, and the North Wagga levee be upgraded from a one-in-17-year ARI to a one-in-20-year ARI or 10 metres in height.
Wagga City Council director of infrastructure services Heinz Kausche said using these specifications, a series of community consultations will then be held to discuss how the work will impact the day-to-day lives of residents and what the levee banks will look like as the upgrade is being completed.
Addressing concerns from Councillor Donna Argus, Mr Kausche said council representatives would be visiting communities such as Gumly Gumly, Oura and the East Wagga business district to discuss how the works and changes to the levee bank structure would affect them in individual terms.
"All we are talking about with council at the moment is that we agree on the concept height one-in-100 (ARI) and a one-in-20 (ARI). That is all this is about," he told the chamber.
The recommendation will be discussed by council at its meeting on July 30.
