The Cobbler Road fire which threatened Yass last night is burning in rugged terrain 18 kilometres from Yass approaching Yass River Road.
Smoke is visible from Yass and the Hume Highway though the road remains open.
The fire has crossed Burrunjuck and Black Range roads which remain closed.

The cool change the arrived late last night is assisting firefighters in their efforts to bring the numerous fires in the Riverina further into control.
The Mates Gully fire which threatened homes in Tarcutta is under control with crews working on blacking out and mopping up after 1600 hectares was burnt out in the fire.
Mates Gully Road remains closed with burnt trees still falling down across the road.
RFS media liason officer Matt Apps said firefighters are also working to mop up disused railway sleepers in the area which are flaring up.
The Hume Highway is open but smoke is visible from the highway with motorist advised to take caution.
The fire in Wokolena Road area which burnt through 140 hectares is under control however there has been some problems for firefighters this morning.
"There have been issues with a hay stack burning,'' Mr Apps said.
"We are cutting a large ditch to put hay into the hole and bury it.''
Firefighters on the ground are having difficulty accessing trees still alight in creek beds and are expecting the use of aircraft to assist later today.
There were hot spots at the fire near Oura following the southerly change last night.
Mopping up continues in the area and the RFS is hoping that this fire can be brought to the patrol level this afternoon.
The Ryan Road fire that threatened Henty has been contained down to the patrol level after 80 hectares were burnt.
Mr Apps said that Wagga based RFS volunteers had have support from outside the area.
"We have had large support from the CFA, RFS volunteers from Albury and Tumbarumba, Fire and Resuce NSW and crews from Victoria helping with the large effort to put out the fires.
"We are trying to relieve crews that have been fighting fires for the last few days before temperatures increase again on Friday and through the weekend."
