Making no secret of his mission to swoop the premiership next season, Dragons coach Anthony Chambeyron yesterday announced the 21-year-old power player is the latest addition to the freshly bolstered team.
Striving to make his impression in the NRL, Maka played for the Toyota Cup premiership-winning Warriors and the Junior Kiwis last year before spending this season with a Newcastle Knights feeder club.
Although he hasn’t cracked the top grade, Chambeyron insists Maka is determined to make his presence felt in Group Nine.
“He came out to Australia this year and played in the Newcastle comp with a feeder club for the Knights,” Chambeyron told The Daily Advertiser yesterday.
“I had some good contacts through a guy I know and we started talking to him and we signed him on Friday.
“He’s back in Auckland at the moment, he still wants to make it with an NRL club.”
Chambeyron said Maka was a versatile playmaker with size and strength, and would slot in anywhere in the backline.
“His key position is fullback but he’s a nice strike player to have in the backs,” he said.
Maka’s recruitment is the last of a trio of blockbuster signings for the Dragons, including Group 10 hooker Jeremy Smith and fellow New Zealand playmaker Peewee Moke.
Although Chambeyron says he is happy with the team he has assembled, he refuses to rule out any further potential signings.
“We’re very happy to get him, it’ll be great to have someone of his calibre with us and he’ll complement Peewee and Jeremy perfectly,” he said.
“He’s only 21 but he’ll bring a lot to the team.
“We’re still hoping to sign a couple of more players but we’re pretty happy with where we sit with our new recruits.”
Maka is currently in Auckland and will arrive in Australia to begin pre-season training with the Dragons in January.
