RULES Club lawn bowls expert Doug Murray believes the quality of bowlers has rarely been better for the coveted invitation triples in Wagga.Murray said yesterday the inclusion of last year's two top teams was a perfect indication of the depth of the field for the lucrative three-day tournament starting on Monday."Spectators are going to witness some great bowls over the three days," Murray said."Last year's winners Don McPhee, Peter Hattam and Ewan McPhee are returning to defend their title and the Wodonga combination that finished runners-up is also coming back. There are also a number other previous winners that will be playing."Boasting $7000 in prizemoney, the invitation triples at the Rules Club features three games of 18 ends on Monday and Tuesday, complemented by two games on Wednesday."Play will commence at 9.15am each day," Murray said. "The tournament is one of the most prestigious on the bowling calendar."Players are coming from the ACT, Narooma, Bodalla, Albury, Wodonga, Henty, Myrtleford, Yass, Terrigal, Tumut and Sydney."Among the leading Riverina bowlers out to stop the visitors waltzing away with the cash next week are previous winners Des Page (Griffith), Norm Thompson (Leeton), Col Curtis (Tumut), Arthur Devlin (Junee) and Graham Dennis (Cootamundra).Leading the way for Wagga will be Ian Williams, Pedro Rudd, Kevin Roser, Robert Anderson and David Oehm. Murray said tournament organiser Gary Brookes and club stalwart Peter Reid would also be contenders after finishing in the money in 2009.
