FOR Wagga trainer Wayne Carroll and a small local racehorse syndicate, it is more about the experience of Flemington than the result. One of Carroll's top runners Gandalf The White is geared up to run on Crown Oaks day, and will line up in the TCL Electronics Plate (1400m), which is open exclusively to grey horses. It will be a rare visit to Flemington for the experienced trainer, as well as Gandalf The White's first Victorian metropolitan race. Whereas most horse trainers and owners make the trip to Melbourne's premier racecourse looking for fame and fortune, Carroll says he is happy just to be part of the Melbourne Cup carnival."It's not always about winning in horse racing," Carroll said yesterday while preparing for today's meeting at Wagga."How many people can say they have had a horse run at the Cup carnival."For all racing people that is really what the sport is all about, it's the highest level you can go."For us, the situation arose where we had a grey horse who qualified for the race, and we though why not take advantage of that and just enjoy it."Gandalf The White will line up against the best grey horses Australia has to offer on Crown Oaks day on Thursday, looking to impress the Victorian racing public. Although the five-year-old gelding will jump from unlucky barrier 13 for the big race, he will have experienced New Zealand jockey Michael Walker aboard him for guidance. "We have Michael Walker taking the ride which is just awesome," Carroll beamed."Of course the barrier is not ideal but if by Thursday the track is a bit cut up that might suit us anyway."I know he can be competitive in this race but he will have to race out of his skin to win."Gandalf was relaxing at his Wagga stables yesterday with Carroll and a handful of his owners.Carroll and the syndicate have horses racing at Wagga today, but will make the trip down to Melbourne tomorrow in preparation for the race.
