'Unbackable favourite' at odds with rivals

RIVERINA harness racing enthusiasts may be excited by the prospect of watching champion three-year-old Sushi Sushi at Wagga, but his rivals do not share the same buzz ahead of today's meeting.Victorian three-year-old Sushi Sushi is expected to start an almost unbackable favourite when he lines up in the $15,000 Alabar Breeders Challenge 3YO C&G Heat (2165m) at Wagga today.It will be the gelding's first start since his triumph in the $400,000 Great Northern Derby in New Zealand and Junee Reefs trainer-driver Matthew Harris is less than thrilled about his arrival in Wagga.Harris has ever-consistent pacer Wry Tangles in the race and gave a blunt reminder of what it means to be Sushi Sushi's opposition."I'd prefer not to race against him," Harris said yesterday."There is no real gain for anyone other than his trainer and maybe the Wagga club."I was disappointed when I knew he was in it. We've got to feather our own nest and try and make ends meet."You can't deny him a start in the race, we've just got to accept it and get on with it."Harris said he and his fellow drivers were almost certainly racing for second placing."For sure," Harris said."He is drawn a little bit awkwardly but I'm sure he'll just ease back then go around."Sushi Sushi has won 14 of his 22 starts for over $630,000 in prizemoney.Wry Tangles, despite never finishing worse than fourth, has returned more than $6000 with one win and eight placings from his 10 starts.Wry Tangles has a task in front of him today but Harris is happy with his progress."He just can't win," Harris said yesterday."He's very honest, he just doesn't seem to be able to win."He'll get his turn. His day will come."The big race featuring Sushi Sushi will take place at 2.58pm, with the fillies division featuring Vertigal to be raced at 2.23pm.
