Timing won't subdue anger

THE timing of yesterday's release of the Murray-Darling Basin Authority guide was disgraceful, according to Murrumbidgee mayor Phillip Wells. The 4pm release of a document which is expected to shape the future of thousands of farmers has been a big talking point with many believing it was designed to take the sting out of the debate.Councillor Wells was outraged by the political motives for the timing of the release and summed up the feelings of many of the Coleambally irrigators he represents."I think it's an absolute disgrace the time they're putting it out," Cr Wells said yesterday morning."It's not giving our ratepayers a fair opportunity to peruse the document."Member for Riverina Michael McCormack is a relative newcomer to the political firefront, but he wasn't fooled by the significance of yesterday's 4pm release or the timing of a leaked figure on Wednesday. "I suppose the cynical side of anyone could look at when it was leaked (that the water cuts would be a figure between 27 and 37 per cent) and link it to a time when we had just won a few medals at the Commonwealth Games and the mood among the general population was high," Mr McCormack said."The 4pm Friday release is a bit the same but the weekend's not going to make the irrigators of the MIA forget the detail."
