SIX people will fight for the right to represent the Australian Liberal Party in the battle for the federal seat of Riverina. The deadline for nominations closed on Friday at 5pm but at this stage individual names have not been released due to a strict vetting process.Prime Minister Kevin Rudd is expected to call a federal election between November and January next year, with Riverina to be one of the most hotly contested seats due to Kay Hull's decision to retire.Despite Riverina being considered a safe Nationals seat, the Liberals decided to contest the seat opposed to their Coalition partners upon Mrs Hull's retirement. At this stage only two people have come forward as potential candidates; Wagga developer Charles Morton and Tumut deputy mayor John Larter. Both have signalled their intention of standing, believing the Liberal Party has a serious chance of replacing Kevin Rudd and his Labor Government.Late last month Cr Larter still had not officially made up his mind saying "there were a lot of things to consider".Mr Morton was more forthcoming when asked."I think I can be an effective representative of the people of Riverina and the possibility that Tony Abbott could become the next Prime Minister is very exciting," he said.As the election announcement draws nearer there are now 14 potential candidates for the seat. The Nationals have also announced six people will vie for the right to replace Mrs Hull, while Craig Hesketh has been confirmed as the One Nation candidate and David Fletcher has been nominated by the Greens. At this stage it is not known when Labor will announce a candidate.
