Relay nothing less than spectacular

23 Mar, 2009 09:14 AM
CONGRATULATIONS Wagga – your efforts at this year’s Relay For Life have made it the most successful one yet.

The weekend’s event will see almost $160,000 donated to The Cancer Council.

And it’s all thanks to the collective effort of 2000 people who formed 134 teams – a record number of entries – and kept up a continuous pace around Allen Staunton Oval for 24 hours.

More than 100 cancer survivors and carers kicked off the event at 10am on Saturday by walking the first lap, led by the Australian Army Band Kapooka.

Twenty-four-hours later and the Riverina Concert Band was on-hand, playing a musical tribute to walkers as they headed off on their final lap on Sunday morning.

Yesterday’s tally of $157,000 is expected to grow once participants have a chance to finalise their sponsorships.

Over the past eight years, the Wagga Relay For Life has sent an amazing $800,000 to The Cancer Council’s cause.

Yesterday, Amy Pokoney from the Wagga branch said she could hardly contain her excitement.

“What a turn-out. Wagga should take a bow. It was a spectacular event,” she said.

All money raised will go towards Cancer Council initiatives such as educational programs, research and providing support for cancer patients and their families.
