THE mystery behind just who will be the candidate from the Liberal Party for the federal seat of Riverina was solved yesterday when Andrew Negline was voted to be the party's representative.Director and marketing and brands manager for Cargill Beef Australia, Mr Negline has been a member of the Liberal Party for seven years and said he felt the move into politics was a natural one."I've lived in Wagga all my life and I've lived overseas, and Wagga and the Riverina is part of the global village," he said yesterday."It's just sort of a natural (move), I've been a party member since 2003."Mr Negline won the first ballot to beat four other pre-selection candidates to the post. Former Wagga City councillor, Julie Elphick, ambulance paramedic and deputy mayor of Tumut, John Larter, businessman Charles Morton and high school teacher Paul McCormack were also on the ballot yesterday."We had a long and vigorous day today ... it was a race to the end," he said after the announcement yesterday.Wagga City Council's marketing manager, Karla McCormack, was also in the running but withdrew from pre-selection on Thursday, after a family member was diagnosed with glandular fever.Mr Negline said water and health for the region are among his party's top priorities for the 61,000 square kilometre electorate and it's 90,000 voters. For Mr Negline, the next two days will entail putting together a team and getting ready for what will be a hotly-contested campaign. Kay Hull's impending retirement has left Riverina wide open, with the notoriously safe Nationals' seat now in the balance.
